Cuyahoga Community College

Tri-C is committed to supporting The Ohio LSAMP Alliance goal of doubling the number of underrepresented minority students earning their baccalaureate degrees in STEM disciplines. Tri-C will increase underrepresented minority student recruitment, retention, persistence, and attainment of degrees by instituting the following programming:

  • Financial support for participation in LSAMP programming
  • Summer Bridge Program (with Cleveland State University)
  • Monthly enrichment meetings
  • Participation in Ohio LSAMP Conference
  • Faculty mentored undergraduate research
  • Transfer planning
  • On campus advising, counseling and tutoring
  • Career workshops

Program Highlights

Tri-C’s partner institution is Cleveland State University. During the summer, both schools work together in hosting the Summer Institute. Summer Institute is a two-week, summer bridge program that helps students refresh their math skills. It also helps students learn the resources that are available to them and builds a peer network to help students succeed in their mathematics courses.

One of the benefits of Tri-C’s location is its proximity to the NASA Glenn Research Center. Monthly enrichment meetings often feature guest speakers from NASA Glenn. Dr. Bilal Bomani runs NASA’s Green Lab Research Facility and is an adjunct faculty member at Tri-C. He also runs Tri-C’s eXtreme Green Lab, which exposes students to research in renewable, alternative, and sustainable green energy. LSAMP Scholars Yessica Jimenez and Mohamed Ag Almahamoud were research assistants to Dr. Bomani as they studied the variables that affect plant growth in different ecosystems.

Monica Stevenson was selected for the eight week NSF Costa Rica REU program. She presented her research poster at the 2018 SACNAS Conference.
